Tron is an 18x24 inch charcoal drawing of my dog named Tron. The expression on his face was something I wanted to capture in this portrait. Although humans and animals are intellectually and anatomically different, that doesn’t mean we don’t share commonalities in the way we think or express how we feel. Humans and dogs evolved together over thousands of years, and they have learned how to be facially expressive to gain human’s trust and compassion. His expression in this charcoal drawing is focused mainly toward the concerned and somewhat empathetic gaze he has toward the viewer; or rather, towards me. The way he is staring back is reflective of the feelings I had toward him the first time I looked at him as a helpless puppy. Now I’m the one in need of his love and affection to get through my struggles with mental health.
